Hrothgar was now ruler of the Danes. There was much wealth and a military that was very successful. Hrothgar wanted to make a mead-hall. He named it Heorot. Grendel, a devil-like monster came from the swamp to hear what was going on at Heorot. He had heard songs about God being sung, which angered him because Grendel wanted the thrown. However, he could not have it because it was apart of God, and Grendel was like the Devil. Grendel had killed men when they were asleep in the mead-hall. Grendel came back the next night, continuing for twelve years. When Beowulf finds out the trouble Grendel has caused, he travels to where the Danes live to help Hrothgar get rid of Grendel for good. He travels by sea with fourteen of his mightiest and bravest men to Hrothgar's kingdom. The watchman stopped Beowulf and his army, asking what they were there for. Beowulf told the watchman that he was there to get rid of Grendel. They are then taken to the mead-hall and offer to Hrothgar that they would defeat Grendel. He accepts their offer. When it becomes night, Beowulf puts his weapons and armor to the side, reminding his men of his idea to fight without weapons. Later that night, Grendel comes towards the mead-hall. Grendel then rushes in and kills one of the warriors. Grendel and Beowulf start fighting. Their bodies being thrown against the walls. Beowulf then rips of Grendel's arm. Grendel then goes back to his home in the swamp to die. Beowulf hangs the arm of Grendel for proof that he has been defeated. The next night, the warriors all go to sleep in the mead-hall, not knowing the Grendel's mother was outside. She came to get revenge because of what happened to her son. Hrothgar tells Beowulf that he wants him to find and kill Grendel's mother. Beowulf swims for hours, making it to the very bottom of the swamp. Grendel's mother notices Beowulf has come and goes after him, dragging him with her. Beowulf tried to fight her without any weapons, but he could not. He notices a sword on the wall and takes it, swinging it through Grendel's mother's neck. She falls and dies. The warriors think Beowulf has died because they see blood start to come up from the bottom of the swamp, they then go back to Heorot. Beowulf grabs Grendel's head and swims back through the swampy waters back to land. The Geats are ecstatic when they see him come up from the swamp. Beowulf gets much praise after defeating Grendel's mother. Beowulf and his men return from where they came from, telling their story of how the defeated Grendel and his mother. After Hygelac is killed in battle, Beowulf rules to kingdom for fifty years. He said that he would not use any type of weapon against the dragon, believing fate will decide who wins. They were both ready to fight. When he swung at the dragon with his sword, it broke, so he only had himself to fight, but he still didn't giveu up. He had succeded his fight with the dragon, but no one was there to help him but one man, Wiglaf. Wiglaf was supposed to carry on the name of Beowulf. Beowulf wanted a tower built for him and have is good pal, Wiglaf take over in his spot. The tweleve bravest Geats had rode their horses around the tower telling their stories of their brave and mighty king.
